Women are happy with one night stands as long as they made the first move and enjoyed the sex.
A study of 763 people also found females are more likely to regret sleeping with someone too soon, while men are likely to regret passing up casual sex.
Men care less about who makes the first move.
Psychologists at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, said both genders are prone to regrets if the sex is bad or if the partner is “sexually incompetent.”
Dr. Leif Edward Ottesen Kennair, from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, said women’s greater reluctance to have one night stands may be due to humans’ evolutionary past.
He said: “Women in the past had a lot more to lose from having sex with a non-committed partner; as if they got pregnant the man could walk away at no cost to anything but his reputation while she would be left to bring up the child.”
He also added that men are more likely to climax during a casual encounter, which cancels out some unpleasant feelings like guilt and shame.
The authors concluded: “Women’s greater worry and lower levels of sexual gratification partially explain why women regret casual sex.”
