To achieve this “minimalist, laid-back” look, stylist David Babaii admits, “I didn’t have to do that much!” He had an elastic ribbon headband custom-made for Hudson, but suggests heading to Barneys “or even the drug store or Amazon” for similar pieces, and ordering a size smaller than you normally would. To ensure everything stayed in place for the whole night, “I put hair spray directly on where I’m going to put the accessory — it gives it a little bit of grit.” The bottom line? “If you’ve got short hair, don’t overdo it,” he says. “Be happy that you don’t have to try too hard!”

To give the “Lady Bird” director’s supershort hair an updo-like look, TRESemmé celeb hairstylist John D blow-dried her cropped cut using both a round brush and his hands. “Dry in the opposite direction from where [the hair lies] to create loads of volume,” he says. He sectioned out the longer hair at the top of her head and pinned it to the side, then twisted small sections of the remaining hair back toward the nape of her neck and pinned it in place. He fastened a simple gold barrette at just about ear level at the back of her head, removed the pin from the top section of hair and tousled it, adding volume by back-combing. To hold it together, he finished with TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist hair spray (hold level 4) all over.

To highlight the “understated elegance” of Williams’ modern, shoulder-length cut, hairstylist Peter Lux used a boar bristle brush to give her blowout a smooth finish. For “maximum gloss,” Lux worked Dove’s Supreme Creme Serum through her lengths to create subtle separation and add shine. He styled a vintage $12,500 Beladora necklace by Asprey (with blue topaz stones that highlight the “Get Out” star’s eyes) as a headband, pinning to secure it at the nape of her neck.

Adir Abergel, creative director for Virtue hair care wove the “Lady Bird” leading lady’s hair into a low fishtail braid and pinned it upward toward the crown. From the front, the look has a kind of David Bowie androgyny, but to “bring out the femininity” in the back, he used a needle to sew metallic silver thread throughout the braid.

“Ribbons are making a comeback because [they’re] such an easy way of updating your ponytail,” says Lacy Redway, who styled Hendricks’ cool updo. After giving the hair a relaxed wave with rollers, she gathered it into a low ponytail, which she tucked upward and then pinned back down to the base of the ponytail. She finished the look by tying black ribbon around the middle of the upright pony and securing at the top with a velvet bow barrette.

After prepping the actress’ hair — which was styled in long, two-strand twists — with Scalp Nourish~ment Braids and Loc Spray and leave-in conditioner, both from his own line, Vernon François gathered the hair into a high ponytail. For an effortlessly edgy vibe like Nyong’o’s, “instead of using a hair tie, grab a flat black shoelace and wrap around the hair until secure and knot both sides together,” he says.

Hairstylist Christian Wood dried the “13 Reasons Why” star’s hair with Wella Eimi Full Volume mousse to create large, soft waves in her lengths. He made a deep side part with a tail comb, and swept one side sleek against the head and secured it with a smattering of star pins.

Thompson is “fearless when it comes to accessories, and trusted my vision,” says Wood of these whimsical hand-shaped pieces. The smooth, braided bun “was a great base to place the accessories to give it a quirky feel, which you only see from discreet angles.”
