Weird But True

Nutella refuses to put 5-year-old’s name on custom jar

Nutella is waging war against Isis–the girl’s name at least.

The company rejected making a personalized jar of its hazelnut spread for a 5-year-old Australian girl named after the Egyptian goddess — not the beheading-happy terror group, according to a report.

Fearing the youngster’s name would give people the wrong idea — since ISIS is an acronym for the Islamic State terror group — a manager at a Myer department store in New South Wales refused to make up the custom-made jar, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Isis’ mother, Heather Taylor, complained to the brand’s parent company, Ferrero Australia.

“I’m really quite upset by this,” Taylor recalled telling an executive, the Herald reported. “You are actually making my daughter’s name dirty. You are choosing to refuse my daughter’s name in case the public refers to it negatively.”

But the company stood by the store.

“Like all campaigns, there needs to be consistency in the way terms and conditions are applied,” the company said in a statement. “Unfortunately, this has meant there have been occasions where a label has not been approved on the basis that it could have been misinterpreted by the broader community or viewed as inappropriate.”

The decision comes just three months into the company’s “Make Me Yours” campaign, which lets people customize their jars.
