LIRR unions make counter-offer in bid to stave off strike

The LIRR unions finally made a counteroffer to the MTA on Thursday, but no deal was struck to stave off a possible July 20 strike.

Union negotiator Anthony Simon, MTA boss Thomas Prendergast and MTA labor-relations director Anita Miller went to a Midtown law office to try to hash out a deal.

Simon said that a strike is still possible, but that the union had a good dialogue with the MTA.

“They’re looking over our counterproposal, and we are going to further discuss,” said Simon.

“The MTA chairman at the table helped make some good discussions, helped bring the discussions along further, and we’ll continue that way.”

He said details of their proposal to counter the MTA’s offer of a 17 percent raise over seven years will not be released to the public.

No new talks have been scheduled, and union leaders will be camped out at the Hilton hotel.

“We will stay here until this is resolved,” Simon added.

Prendergast said more talks would have to be held.
