Dior’s $1,100 sneakers are a kick in the wallet

First, fashionistas ditched their fanciful heels for “ugly” Birkenstocks and Tevas this summer. Now , they’re tripping over themselves to get sneakers that cost the median price of a month’s rent in NYC.

You have Dior designer Raf Simons to thank for the $1,100 “Dior Fusion” slip-on trainers, the mesh-and-rubber kicks adorned with sequins and a ladylike bow. For that price, you’d think they’d at least come with laces … dipped in gold.

The shoes debuted on the spring 2014 couture runway in January and have since become a coveted accessory, showing up on the Last Look page of Vogue’s July issue and getting major play on trendy Web site stylebubble.co.uk. Expect to see them adorning the feet of New York’s Fashion Week attendees come September.
