Jane Lynch is her usual funny self in convincing cabaret debut

Th3 strapping Jane Lynch came up short in only one way Wednesday night: Her cabaret debut — “my maiden voyage,” she quipped — ended too soon. Even with two encores, it clocked in at under an hour (for a top price of $145, mind you). But then, the “Glee” star knows the golden rule: Leave them wanting more.

Lynch, an improv and stage veteran, staked her ground with such relaxed ease that it was impossible to tell what was scripted and what wasn’t. No matter — it was all funny.

Oh, and she can sing, too.

The set list was a well-paced mix of show tunes (Irving Berlin’s “Mr. Monotony”), semi-obscure nuggets (Dave Frishberg’s “Slappin’ the Cakes on Me”) and left-field oddities — “The Skeletons of Quinto” and “Blood on the Coals,” two melodramatic numbers from Christopher Guest’s folk-music mockumentary, “A Mighty Wind.”

Backing Lynch were a spry trio and her buddy Kate Flannery (the alcoholic Meredith Palmer on “The Office”) on vocal harmonies. Together, the two women rocked a bongo-driven arrangement of “Far From the Home I Love,” from “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Cheyenne Jackson joined Lynch for Frank and Nancy Sinatra’s cheesetastic “Something Stupid,” the openly gay pair exchanging smoldering looks that ended in a lip-lock.

Things were more demure with Lynch’s “Glee” co-star Matthew Morrison, who materialized for a ukulele version of “Over the Rainbow.”

And of course Lynch circled back to “Annie,” in which she made a strong Broadway debut last summer. She delivered the child-hating Miss Hannigan’s anthem “Little Girls” with a delicious malice that felt even more pointed out of the show’s context.

Surely Broadway’s producers can find her another gig soon?
