Ex-Yankee Knoblauch arrested for assaulting ex-wife

Former Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch was arrested Wednesday night in Houston after allegedly assaulting his ex-wife, Cheri, according to police.

Knoblauch, who appeared to be intoxicated at the time, grabbed her by the arm, rammed her head into a wall and threw a humidifier at her, according to a police report. The two divorced in 2012.

The 46-year-old Knoblauch, who last played in the majors in 2002 with the Royals, was released on $10,000 bail and will have to appear in court on July 30.

It’s not the first time Knoblauch has been in legal trouble. In 2009, Knoblauch was charged with assaulting and choking Stacey Stelmach, his wife at the time, as the two were going through a divorce.

Known for his throwing issues on the field, he once hit sportscaster Keith Olbermann’s mother with an errant throw as she sat in the Yankee Stadium stands behind first base. Knoblauch had 119 career errors in 1,381 games, including a career-high 26 in 1999 with the Yankees.

He spent the first seven years of his career with the Twins before getting traded to the Yankees in 1998. Knoblauch won four World Series titles — 1991 with the Twins and 1998-00 with the Yankees. He also was a four-time All-Star and surprisingly won a Gold Glove in 1997 as the league’s best defensive second baseman.

Scheduled to be inducted into the Twins Hall of Fame in August, the team announced Thursday it has canceled the event.

“In light of recent news reports surrounding Chuck Knoblauch, as well as direct communication with the former Twins second baseman, the Minnesota Twins have decided to cancel the team’s 2014 Hall of Fame induction ceremony scheduled for August 23 at Target Field,” the Twins said in a statement.

Knoblauch had been elected in January by a 62-member committee consisting of Minnesota and national media, club officials, fans and past elected members, using rules similar to those necessary for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
