San Francisco bans Lorde song until World Series ends

Superstition in sports is nothing new, but San Francisco is taking things to a whole new level in preparation for the World Series.

Over the next week or so, Bay Area-based radio stations KFOG Radio and 96.5 KOIT will cease all airplay of Lorde’s smash single, “Royals.” With the 2012 World Champion Giants taking on the Kansas City Royals in Game 1 on Tuesday night, the stations announced via social media that the airwaves will be “Royals”-free until the series concludes.

Not to be outdone by their West Coast rivals, Kansas City’s 99.7 The Point plans to up the airplay of “Royals,” playing the chart-topping hit every hour, on the hour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the opening night of the series, Oct. 21.

We’re sure Lorde hardly minds San Francisco’s snub considering the Giants aren’t exactly her favorite team. The Grammy winner drew inspiration for “Royals” after looking through an issue of National Geographic magazine and spotting a photo of Hall of Fame third baseman George Brett signing autographs and smiling with fans. The baseball legend played for the Royals from 1973 to 1993.

Lorde and Brett met each other backstage at a Las Vegas concert in April.
