British Open gets schedule juggled with storms on the way

HOYLAKE, England — In anticipation for what is expected to be heavy rain and wind on Saturday, British Open officials have decided to start the third round at 9 a.m. local time (4 a.m. Eastern) in threesomes using both the first and 10th tees.

It is believed to be the first time in 143 years the Royal & Ancient has done this.

“On a beautiful evening such as we have [Friday], it’s hard to believe the disruptive weather forecast that we have received for [Saturday], but the Met Office’s onsite forecasters believe that there is a significant risk of thunderstorms and heavy rain, which will interrupt play,’’ R&A rules chairman David Rickman said. “This is consistent with the Amber weather warning that’s been issued for much of England and Wales.

“Therefore, we have taken a number of decisions regarding [Saturday’s] play to maximize the chances of completing the championship on time.’’

This, according to Rickman, will give the R&A the potential to accommodate up to five hours of delay and still complete the third round by Saturday night.
