NFL Draft bolts Big Apple

Roger Goodell finally made it official Thursday — the NFL Draft is leaving New York.

Confirming months of speculation and hints, the league’s commissioner told The Los Angeles Times that the draft will move to Los Angeles or Chicago in 2015.

“We’re focusing solely on Los Angeles and Chicago now,” Goodell told the paper at an event in Beverly Hills. “There are very attractive aspects to each of those cities. Because we don’t have the appropriate dates in May, our focus is completely on Los Angeles and Chicago.”

New York has played host to the draft every year since 1965 but lost out when Radio City Music Hall became unavailable in April and May of 2015 because of a planned Rockettes show, and no other suitable site in the city could be found.

The league isn’t ruling out returning to New York in 2016 or beyond if Radio City or another suitable location becomes available.

The 2015 draft will be held either April 22-25 or April 29-May 2. Goodell said a final decision on the site and format will be made next month.
