City closer to lowering speed limit to 25 mph

The city moved closer to lowering its speed limit to 25 mph after a Vision Zero bill overwhelmingly passed the state Senate at the last minute Thursday night.

The legislation, introduced by Bronx Sen. Jeff Klein, passed 58-2 on the last day of the legislative session.

It will lower the speed limit to 25 mph across the city, and require community board input for streets that the city wants to slow down even further.

“A 25-mph speed limit across the city will prevent more death on our streets and ensure drivers take more care when they are behind the wheel,” said City Council transportation chair Ydanis Rodriguez.

Families for Safe Streets, which represents the relatives of those killed in traffic crashes, said they were heartened but not celebrating.

“We have a long way to go until our streets are safe,” said Aaron Charlop-Powers. “And we say to everyone who will listen — this is a matter of life and death, and we need to press on.”

The next step is for the legislation to move to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is expected to sign it into law.

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero plan strives to end all traffic deaths in the city within 10 years.
