Former Knicks GM heads north for job with far less pressure

Glen Grunwald hasn’t exactly moved on to bigger and better things since he was surprisingly canned by James Dolan less than a week before training camp last season.

The former Knicks general manager is now working as the director of athletics and recreation at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, according to ESPN New York.

Grunwald, 56, was in the mix for the Grizzlies’ GM opening, but Memphis went with Ed Stefanski instead. Grunwald says he was contacted by the search firm looking to fill the McMaster position to see if he knew of any quality candidates, and he nominated himself.

“They have good facilities, they have successful programs … there’s a lot of good things going on there,” Grunwald told ESPN. “It’s got a really good vibe, so hopefully I can enhance and build upon the good work that’s already been done before me.

“I’ve always thought this would be a fun and rewarding job to have.”

Grunwald was with the Knicks for seven years, working under Isiah Thomas and Donnie Walsh before becoming general manager in June 2011. As GM, he put together a team that won 54 regular-season games, a division title and a first-round playoff series in 2013.

Then he was surprisingly let go last September by Dolan, who replaced Grunwald with Steve Mills, currently the team’s GM under president Phil Jackson.

“They’re in good hands with Phil Jackson, and it will be interesting to see how things develop there,” Grunwald said. “He certainly has a track record of success.”

Former Lakers and Bucks assistant coach Jim Cleamons will join Knicks coach Derek Fisher’s staff, reuniting with Jackson, the LA Times reported. The Post’s Marc Berman reported in July the Knicks were talking to Cleamons.
