2 hurt by ‘science experiment’ blast at Stony Brook University

Two people were injured Thursday in an explosion during a “routine scientific experiment” at Stony Brook University in Long Island, officials said.

The faculty member and graduate student suffered minor injuries and were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, said the school’s spokesperson Lauren Sheprow. They are listed in good condition.

The explosion, which did not happen during class, occurred in a second-floor lab in the Earth and Space Sciences building around 4:30 p.m.

“There is some structural damage to the lab itself,” said Sheprow. “There is no risk for danger to anyone else in or around campus community.”

The building was evacuated and is being evaluated to determine when it can be reopened.
