Paul Walker’s ‘Shark Week’ connection

Who knew that, along with his ruggedly handsome good looks and acting chops, Paul Walker had a passion for jaws?

Before his film career took off, the actor studied marine biology in college and continued to be active in marine conservation expeditions over the last decade. Last year he appeared in the Shark Week special “Spawn of Jaws,” about his friend Dr. Michael Domeier’s mission to find the so-called pupping grounds where great white sharks give birth.

Walker tragically died last November, three weeks after the first shoot for the sequel “Spawn of Jaws: The Birth,” which continued the two-year journey of the pregnant great white named Gil Rakers and premiered Wednesday night.

Domeier tells Entertainment Weekly that he debated whether to continue with the film after the actor’s untimely death, but ultimately decided “Paul would want us to finish it, [so] let’s finish it.”

In a clip from the sequel, Walker and Domeier deploy cameras in the water to find evidence of the great white pups as they search for what could be Gil Rakers’ breeding ground.

“Spawn of Jaws: The Birth” will re-air Thursday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. on Discovery Channel.
