The 7 best ‘Flight of the Conchords’ songs

Is it business time again?

The forces behind the wonderfully silly HBO musical comedy “The Flight of the Conchords” announced yesterday they’re working on a new project for the network.

The as-yet untitled show isn’t a sequel to “Conchords” but will be a new four-episode series featuring Jemaine Clement, half of the comedy duo, and Taika Waititi, who directed some of the episodes, according to the Guardian.

It’s unclear if Bret McKenzie, the other half of the duo, will be involved, though Clement did say he wants to do a musical or movie still, and that he misses doing “Conchords” gigs.

So in light of that news, let’s take a look back at the finest songs from the New York City based troupe of musical New Zealanders to see why you should be excited for a return.

7. ‘Inner City Pressure’

The Conchords had golden ear for mimicking music styles, and this one was their tribute to the Pet Shop Boys sound, a la “West End Girls.” It’s new wavey look at the troubles of living in this expensive city, with lines like: “You know you’re not in high finance/considering second-hand underpants.”

6. ‘It’s Business Time’

Perhaps the band’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” the catchy chorus gives way to a description of settled-down, humdrum sex life, with all its toothbrushing, recycling-sorting things that pass as foreplay. Making love for two minutes, aw yeah.

5. ‘Bowie’s in Space’

We’d post this whole episode here if we could because it’s a glorious homage to all the different forms of David Bowie over the years. This song is a take off on Bowie’s spacey 70s era. “Do you have one really funky sequined space suit, Bowie, or do you have several ch-ch-changes?

4. ‘She’s so Hot’

Another dead-on genre mocking, this song delves into Bret’s imagination as he pictures hitting on a sexy coworker, all to a reggaeton beat. Lyrics include: “I want to tell her how hot she is but she’ll think I’m being sexist. She’s so hot she’s making me sexist.”

3. ‘Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros’

The rap battle for the ages! The Conchords’ silliness is in fine form (even the song title is fun to say) as they spit hot rhymes at each other as fictional rapping animals. It’s actually got a pretty good beat too.

2. ‘Man or Muppet’

OK, this isn’t from the “Flight of the Conchords” show, but the song from the 2011 movie “The Muppets” is too good to not include. McKenzie wrote the song, which was sung by Jason Segel in the movie and went on to win an Oscar. Plus, you know how we feel about the Muppets.

1. ‘The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room’

Ah urban love: so mysterious, so fickle. The duo’s song about relative attractiveness is on point when it comes to flirting these days. The girl they have their eyes set on is attractive, but they’re, you know, realistic about it. Best line: “You’re so beautiful, you could be a part-time model/but you’d probably still have to keep your normal job.”
