The curious excuse NFL prospects have for failed drug tests

NFL prospects need to be careful how much water they drink – it could result in failed drug tests. At least that’s what two agents of players are claiming.

LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger and Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan were two of more than 10 players who produced positive tests during the NFL Combine, sources told ESPN, and the two are claiming their diluted urine was the result of drinking too much water to combat dehydration. A diluted sample is usually considered a failed test.

Jason Eliowitz, Mettenberger’s physical therapist, said the quarterback was drinking at least one gallon of water per day, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Mettenberger’s agent, Joe Linta, said medical documentation for Mettenberger’s condition was given to Dr. Lawrence Brown, the league’s adviser for drugs of abuse and alcohol. Linta told ESPN he is still awaiting Brown’s response.

Jernigan’s agent, Sonny Shah, told ESPN that, like Mettenberger, Jernigan’s test result was a result of over-hydration.
