Potenial jurors for Malcom Smith trial don’t know who John Catsimatidis is

Michael Bloomberg is the former mayor no one can forget — and supermarket tycoon John Catsimatidis is apparently the former mayoral hopeful no one can remember.

Potential jurors in the federal bribery trial of Queens state Sen. Malcolm Smith were asked Monday if they recognized any names on a list of possible witnesses or people who would be mentioned during the trial — and nearly all of the 48 in the White Plains court said they knew only of Bloomberg.

But only one knew of Catsimatidis, the Gristedes boss with a net worth of $3.5 billion who spent a small fortune on his campaign and lost the 2013 Republican primary to Joe Lhota.

Others on the list included former longtime Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, state Sen. Diane Savino (D-Brooklyn/Staten Island), former Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión, Yonkers political operative and convicted felon Anthony Mangone, and the late former state Sen. Guy Velella (D-Bronx), who resigned in disgrace after pleading guilty to bribery charges.

Jury selection is expected to be completed Tuesday with opening statements to follow.

Smith — a Democrat and former Senate majority leader — was busted last year in a failed scheme to secure a spot on the Republican primary line for mayor, allegedly by bribing former Queens Councilman Dan Halloran and then-Queens GOP Vice Chairman Vincent Tabone.

Both Smith and Halloran face up to 45 years behind bars, while Tabone faces 25 years.

As The Post reported last week, Halloran is seeking to use an insanity defense related to a brain tumor that was removed in 2012. Judge Kenneth Karas is expected to rule on the request Tuesday.
