Labor Day weekend means fun in the sun

Labor Day weekend has arrived!

Swimming was not allowed at area beaches due to powerful waves, but the weather is expected to clear up over the weekend giving beachgoers nothing but clear skies and tan lines.

Nearly 35 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more away from home to celebrate the national “working man’s” holiday as they bid farewell to the dog days of summer.

Food will be scarfed down, beer will be guzzled and prices will be slashed during this weekend’s Labor Day festivities — which include New York City events such as the Electric Zoo music festival, US Open and the crowd-pleasing Unicycle Festival.

But it seems like the trendiest thing to do this year will be to hop in the car and hit the road for some beneficial time away from home.

Around 29.7 million people are expected to be driving this Labor Day weekend due to plummeting gas prices, which are at a comparatively low average of $3.44 a gallon.

The first Monday of September is also a day of excess as Americans gorge themselves on barbecue.

US eaters consume 818 hot dogs per second on Labor Day, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. Labor Day is the third-most popular holiday for barbecuing, just behind Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association.

The most-beloved backyard foods to grill are burgers, steaks, hot dogs and chicken. Corn and potatoes are top choices for sides.

Americans looking to wash their meal down with a cold one have generated beer sales topping $11 billion between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to the National Beer Wholesalers Association.
