Weird But True

Great Dane eats 43 socks

A Great Dane in Oregon, with an appetite to rival Scooby-Doo, scarfed down 43 socks — and lived to fetch another day!

Vets at the DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland solved a family’s strange mystery of their disappearing socks when X-rays revealed the colossal canine’s shocking feast.

The family knew something was wrong when they noticed the dog “retching and vomiting all day,” the Veterinary Practice News reports.

An X-ray revealed the dirty laundry in his pooch’s stomach. That’s when the vet performed exploratory surgery to remove the socks.

What happened next was a scene straight out of a magic show.

“We opened up his stomach and kept removing sock after sock of all different shapes and sizes,” Dr. Ashley Magee at DoveLewis told KGW in Portland.

The socks were removed and the dog was released from the hospital the next day, according to the Veterinary Practice News.

Vets at DoveLewis were so astonished by the dog’s X-ray revelation that they decided to submit the image to the Practice News’ annual “They Ate WHAT?” photo contest — and this Great Dane had some serious competition.

Animal hospitals from Texas, Florida and Oregon all claimed top spots in the ninth annual radio-graph contest published in the September issue of the Veterinary Practice News.

Judges saw everything from fishhooks to rubber duckies inside the stomachs of dogs, a frog and even a bearded dragon.

The four-legged sock-gobbler’s X-ray took home the $500 third prize.
