9 children, 4 adults rescued from boat lost in the fog

Cops and firefighters rescued a boat with nine children and four adults aboard that got lost in the fog-bound Ambrose Channel Friday night.

Authorities say the 36-foot Boston Whaler became had power but couldn’t maneuver due to low visibility about a mile south of the Verrazano Bridge around 9:30 p.m.

“The Ambrose Channel is a particularly hazardous area,” said fireman Chris Tucker, a seven-year veteran. “It’s the main shipping channel and massive shipping boats run through there 24/7, so we had to get this boat out of there and out of harm’s way.”

The boat was originally bound for Jersey City, according to authorities, but due to the dense fog, the boat and it’s 13 passengers were left stranded for over a half-hour.

“They were relieved to see us,” Tucker said of the rescue. “It’s like driving blind in fog like that.”

Firefighters with the Summer Boat Program, who regularly rescue stranded boats and people in the water, towed the vessel to safety before the NYPD took over and escorted the boat back to Jersey City.

“It was a perfect example of city agencies working together,” Tucker said.

No one was injured during the rescue, however authorities say one of the children on board was sea sick.
