Man imprisoned on gun rap settles for $72.5K

A Brooklyn man who spent two months at Rikers Island on a gun rap that was later tossed has settled with the city for $72,500, according to Brooklyn federal court documents.

Ralik Bonds claimed that he was walking home with some friends after playing basketball in May 2011 in East New York when they were suddenly surrounded by NYPD officers.

His attorney, Chidi Eze, told The Post Thursday that police had received reports of a shooting in the area and claimed to have found a gun near where the group was walking.

The suit claimed that Bonds and his pals were searched but that no illegal items were recovered.

Bonds was handcuffed at the scene and charged with gun possession, Eze said.

Unable to post his $5,000 bond, Bonds was marooned on Rikers Island for two months before all charges against him here dropped in January of 2012, according to court papers.

Eze said that DNA and fingerprint tests did not match Bonds to the gun.

The city agreed to pay Bonds $72,500 – including attorney feeds – to settle the case. The award is not an admission of wrongdoing on the NYPD’s part.
