Robin Williams in Mets booth is everything Billy Crystal said it would be

Two legendary comedians walk into a Shea Stadium broadcast booth.

It sounds like the start of a joke, and in many ways it is. It was also the subject of one of the anecdotes shared by Billy Crystal in a touching tribute to his late friend Robin Williams at Monday night’s Emmy Awards.

Williams and Crystal did a TV appearance during a 1989 Mets-Reds matinee — this one, if you’re wondering — on “Comic Relief Day” in Queens. Williams, a baseball novice attending his second ever game, was in the middle of cracking up Tim McCarver with a Russian character when a foul ball came screaming into the booth.

“I’m glad I had protection,” Williams quipped.

Then Kevin Elster grounded out to the end the inning.
