Another bite of ‘Leftovers’ on HBO’s menu

The network has renewed “The Leftovers” for a second season.

Based on Tom Perotta’s novel of the same name, “The Leftovers” follows the effects of a Rapture-like event on the residents of a small New York suburb three years after two percent of the global population disappeared without a trace.

The 10-episode first season stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman and Liv Tyler and has averaged nearly 8 million weekly viewers. Its Season One finale airs Sept. 7.

“It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to their provocative and original storytelling,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said.

The series was co-created by Perotta and Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “Star Trek”).

The renewal of “The Leftovers” comes as three other HBO dramas — “True Blood,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Newsroom” — are preparing to end their runs.
