ALBANY — Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has a challenger.

John Cahill, a former top aide to Gov. Pataki, will make an official announcement Sunday, according to a source close to the situation.

Cahill, a Republican, sent a letter to the different GOP county leaders around the state seeking their support and informing them of his decision.

“As I move closer to this weekend’s formal announcement,” the letter reads.

A source confirmed the announcement will be made Sunday.

In his letter Cahill says his sole purpose for running is to be AG, and not use the office as a stepping stone.

“For too long AG has stood for ‘Aspiring Governor,’ not Attorney General. We need someone who will be an advocate for all the people of our State,” the letter reads.

Both Eliot Spitzer and Andrew Cuomo served as AG before becoming governor.

Schneiderman, the Democratic incumbent, has just under $6 million on hand to fund his reelection campaign.

A pro-business political action committee, Communities for a Fair New York, plans to raise and spend millions of dollars to defeat Schneiderman.
