New Yankees pitcher and model wife are Twitter stars

Brandon McCarthy may not solve the Yankees’ starting pitching woes, but he and his wife will add some online entertainment.

Brandon and Amanda McCarthy, a fashion model, have earned plenty of attention for their extraordinary use of Twitter. The two often joke with each on the social media service, like what happened Sunday when news of the trade sending McCarthy from the Diamondbacks to the facial-hair-banning Yankees for Vidal Nuno broke.

Now the question becomes, will the tight-laced Yankees ask the McCarthys to curtail their Twitter humor now that he’s wearing pinstripes? Like this birthday tweet exactly three years ago (Brandon turned 31 today).

The high school sweethearts from Colorado even used one of the scariest injuries seen on a baseball field as an eventual punch line. Two years ago, while pitching for the A’s, McCarthy took a line drive off the head from the Angels’ Erick Aybar. McCarthy walked off under his own power, but needed emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain caused by intracranial bleeding.

After he was in the clear, Brandon decided to tempt fate again.

McCarthy suffered a seizure the following year as an aftereffect of the head injury. Amanda pushed the table away at a Phoenix restaurant and got him help. Now Brandon is charged with helping a Yankees rotation that likely has lost CC Sabathia for the season. Amanda travels to most games, and is already in Cleveland to see Brandon’s Yankees debut on Wednesday.

She seems equally interested in three things: Brandon, baseball and their pooch — a Westie names Hobbes.
