Man U legend subs himself in during likely final home game

No wonder they call it the “Theatre of Dreams.”

In what has been a nightmare season for Manchester United and its fans, club legend and interim manager Ryan Giggs offered something of a happy ending when he brought himself on as a substitute near the end of what might be his final game at the team’s home stadium, Old Trafford, on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old Welshman, who’s filled in as the team’s manager since David Moyes was fired on April 22, had not named himself to the active team sheet in his previous two matches at the helm of one of the world’s most storied soccer clubs.

Since being called up to the senior squad when he was 17 in 1991, Giggs has amassed 13 Premier League winner’s medals, four FA Cup winner’s medals, three League Cup winner’s medals and two Champions League winner’s medals, and became one of legendary former manager Alex Ferguson’s most trusted players.

While he’s yet to announce whether or not he’ll return for his 25th season, many expect the winger to take a job managing another club or a senior coaching position under whomever takes over as Manchester United at season’s end. He has already been ruled out to take over as Manchester United’s full-time manager.

Current Dutch national coach Louis Van Gaal is the favorite to fill the vacancy.

Giggs brought himself on in the 70th minute of the 3-1 victor against Hull City, assisting on the team’s third goal, a strike from forward Robin van Persie.

The team winds up its season away against South Hampton on Sunday.
