NBC cancels ‘Community’ after 5 seasons

Farewell, “Community,” you had a good run.

NBC on Friday canceled the Joel McHale cult comedy after five seasons, leaving it one season short of its goal of “six seasons and a movie.”

“Community” has been a perpetual bubble show since it premiered in 2009, earning critical praise but low ratings. Its fifth-season finale last month averaged just 2.9 million viewers and a 1.0 rating in the key adults under-50 demo.

With its cancellation, NBC will bring back just two comedies next season, “Parks and Recreation” and the just-renewed “About a Boy.”

In addition to “About a Boy,” NBC on Friday also renewed “Hannibal” for a third season while canceling second-year drama “Revolution” and freshman sitcom “Growing Up Fisher.”
