Teen killed by boat’s propellers was gymnast, honor student

A pretty Greenwich HS student who loved gymnastics and played field hockey was identified Thursday as the tragic victim of a fatal tubing accident, cops and friends said.

Emily Fedorko was killed Wednesday when she was struck by the whirling propeller of a boat driven by a pal.

“She was a really happy person,” said classmate Dan Ozizmir. “She always had friends with her.”

The 16-year-old beauty was an honors student who would frequently go tubing with high-school pals.

“They were a tight group of friends. That wasn’t the first time they went tubing this summer,” said another classmate, Jack Martin. “She was one of the nicest girls I’ve ever met.”

Fedorko and another girl were riding in a tube being towed by a 21-foot Wahoo recreational powerboat near Greenwich Point on Long Island Sound when they were accidentally thrown from the flotation device at about 2 p.m., according to Greenwich police.

The driver turned the boat around to pick them up and accidentally crashed into the girls, cops said.

Fedorko, who was going into her junior year of high school, died when she was struck by the boat’s outboard-engine propeller.

The other teen, whose name has not been revealed, sustained an injury to the lower left leg and was taken to Stamford Hospital, cops said.

“It’s surreal to hear what happened. I would never think such a horrible thing would happen from a common activity,” Martin said.

Friends identified one person aboard the boat as Sabrina Thurber, 15, who also attends Greenwich HS.

“Still cant believe what I witnessed today, you will never leave my heart and I will miss you forever,” a grieving Thurber tweeted Wednesday night.

The 16-year-old boat driver, whose name has not been released, was described by a family member as an experienced boater and a member of the nearby Riverside Yacht Club.

“She has a boating license definitely. She grew up on the water. She sails,” said a family member. “She’s driven that boat before and gone tubing. She’s very comfortable on the water.

“She’s very sad about it and freaked out,” the family member added.

Grief counselors were on hand Thursday at Greenwich HS, where students gathered to mourn Fedorko, a resident of nearby Old Greenwich.
