UN passes resolution calling for MH17 probe

The UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution Monday calling for a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine and an international probe into last week’s unprovoked attack on a Malaysian jet.

The Australian-introduced resolution forced a grudging “Yes” vote from Russia, which has been deflecting blame for the inhumane missile attack that was likely carried out by pro-Moscow rebels.

US Ambassador Samantha Power blasted Russia for dragging its feet since Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was blasted out of the sky on Thursday, killing all 298 people on board.

“There is one party from whom we’ve heard too little condemnation, and that is Russia,” Power said.

“If there really is consensus that these crimes merit immediate investigation, why did we meet here today to demand one?”

Power added: “Not everyone is supporting the investigation. If they did, [investigators would have] unimpeded access to the crime scene, all the wreckage would’ve been left preserved.”

Instead, “we have literally heard the sound of debris, all of it evidence that needs to be carefully preserved, crunching beneath separatists’ feet,” she said.
