Angels teammates: Albert Pujols called his historic homers

Albert Pujols? Or Babe Ruth?

On Tuesday night, Pujols hit two homers in a 7-2 Angels win over the Nationals to reach the magic milestone of 500 for his career.

According to STATS, he became the first player to hit his 499th and 500th home runs in the same game, and at 34 years, 96 days old, became the third-youngest player to reach 500 homers (Alex Rodriguez and Jimmie Foxx were 32).

Before the game, Pujols told his teammates that he was going to reach 500, calling two shots in Ruthian fashion.

“He said he was going to hit two homers and drive in five runs,” shortstop Erick Aybar said, according to the Orange County Register.

“If Albert tells you something, he’s going to do it,” center fielder Mike Trout added.

Pujols — who now has a majors-leading eight homers — told his wife he was feeling “so good” about his swing she should move up her weekend trip to New York and travel to Washington in case he got to 500 there.

His hunch was right — he called it, after all — but his wife was still back in California, getting her nails done at the moment Pujols was making history.
