Mike Pettine calls an audible on Manziel-Hoyer decision

Johnny Manziel will have to wait a little longer to find out his fate with the Browns and the NFL.

Cleveland coach Mike Pettine said Tuesday he is delaying his plan to decide between Manziel and Brian Hoyer as the Browns’ opening day starter after both played poorly in Monday’s 24-23 preseason loss at the Redskins.

“No, we’re not in a position to make it at this time,” Pettine said in a conference call Tuesday afternoon with Cleveland reporters. “A meeting about the quarterbacks will occur later.”

Pettine said the choice for Week 1 in Pittsburgh might not come until after the Browns’ third preseason game Saturday at home against the Rams.

“I want to get it right, be diligent, do the right thing and I don’t want to make a decision [just to make it],” Pettine said.

Pettine’s decision was delayed after Hoyer went 2-for-6 for 16 yards and Manziel was 2-for-7 for 29 yards against the Redskins’ first- and second-team defense in the first half Monday.

Manziel, meanwhile, is expected to be fined by the NFL for flipping his middle finger at the Redskins’ bench in the third quarter Monday night.
Manziel said afterward that he had lost his temper after being taunted by Washington players and fans all night.

Manziel was caught on camera and stands to be fined at least $11,025 for the gesture, according to the NFL’s fine schedule.
