How to avoid a summer makeup meltdown

Banish frizz and fight makeup meltdown with these hair and beauty tips from the pros.

Work mermaid waves

When the weather is stifling, who doesn’t want to be a siren with carefree tresses? Just remember, the magic starts in the shower.

“Generally, washing your hair too often dries it out,” says Cristina B., a stylist at Rita Hazan Salon. “So even though it’s summer and you sweat and want clean hair, sometimes just rinsing it really well is enough.”

  • After showering, air-dry your hair a little by tousling with fingers.
  • Part your hair down the center and create two braids on each side of your head. Finish drying with a blow-dryer.
  • After a few minutes, undo braids. Then, go over a few pieces with a one-inch curling iron.
  • Apply Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray ($39 at neimanmarcus.com) to the ends. For the hair closest to the scalp, use Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray ($21.50 at neimanmarcus.com) for a little texture.

Do the dew

The best beach beauty is effortless — and natural-looking. “Stay away from too much foundation and powder,” says celebrity makeup artist Sonia Kashuk. Still, you can cheat — and Kashuk shows you how.

  • Use an undetectable stick foundation (Sonia Kashuk Undetectable Foundation Stick, $10.99 at target.com) for sheer perfection of the little bits that need blending out.
  • Try a self-tanner or sheer bronzer (Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity Bronzer in Goddess, $12.99 at target.com) to avoid looking too made up. Or opt for a cheek stain (Sonia Kashuk Dewy Luxe Lip & Cheek Balm, $9.99 at target.com) or cream blush (Sonia Kashuk Crème Blush; $9.79 at target. com), which are more transparent.
  • Use a gloss on the lips for a hint of color (Sonia Kashuk Ultra Luxe Lip Gloss, $8.99 at target.com).
  • Apply a thin veil of long-wear cream shadow with a bit of shimmer (Sonia Kashuk Pearlescence Longwear Crème Shadow, $8.99 at target.com).
  • Apply just one swipe of waterproof mascara (Sonia Kashuk Lashify Waterproof Mascara, $6.99 at target.com).

Be a cool cat

Celeb makeup artist Meredith Hayman’s cat-eye tips:

  • Apply Make Up For Ever Eye Shadow in “Yellow Gold 10” ($21 at sephora.com) from upper lash line to crease, and to bottom lash line from inner corner halfway to the center of eye.
  • With short strokes, apply Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in black ($20 at sephora.com), to upper lid line, swooping at outer corner — define wing with a Q-tip dipped in eyemakeup remover.
  • Apply pencil eyeliner, like Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in “Pearly Brown 2L” ($19 at sephora.com), to lower lash line from outer corner to middle to meet gold shadow.

Go orange (in a good way)

When giving lip this summer, go bold or go home, says Melanie Mills, the former makeup guru behind “Dancing With the Stars.” For maximum pop, try a traffic-stopping shade of orange.

  • Apply foundation with a Beautyblender sponge ($19.95 at sephora.com) lightly to lips.
  • Add a translucent powder on top of the foundation.
  • Fully line and fill in the lip with Make Up For Ever Aqua Lipliner Pencil in “Bright Orange 17C” ($19 at sephora.com). For a glossy look, top it off with Gleam Lip Radiance in “Unstoppable” ($24 at gleambymelaniemills.com).

Fake a tan

Ladies who prefer the sharp golden glow a la Adriana Lima are in good company. Bronzed, sculpted faces were the order of the day at Gucci, and with some expert blending the look can be yours, says celeb makeup artist Nicole Bryl.

  • With a foundation brush, apply an appropriate warm-toned foundation all over face and neck. Try Transmat Cream Makeup by Sisley ($105 at nordstrom. com) or, for darker skin tones, the IMAN makeup collection (imancosmetics.com).
  • Apply a foundation one to two shades darker under your cheekbones to create a chiseled illusion. Remember that each area you contour must be well-blended.
  • Dust a dual-finish powder like Dior’s Healthy Glow bronzing powder ($52 at sephora.com) over the contoured area to soften the edge and give your face a more natural look.

Look rosy, not shiny

Don’t sweat the heat. Smooth, shine-free skin and sun-kissed cheeks, have never been hotter according to celebrity makeup artist Nicole Bryl, who’s worked with Naomi Watts.

  • With a foundation brush, conservatively apply MAC Prep + Prime CC Colour Correcting Primer ($30 at nordstrom.com) all over face and neck to even out and brighten skin. Then, delicately spot-check any blemishes with a concealer pencil a shade lighter than your skin tone. L’Oréal’s True Match Crayon Concealer ($8.95 at drugstore.com) does the trick!
  • Lightly dust MAC loose Prep + Prime CC Powder ($25 at nordstrom. com) with a big brush, creating an invisible veil over the eyes, face and neck.
  • Add a bold blush with extra pigmentation in your color of choice. MAC Powder Blush ($21 at nordstrom.com) holds all day.

Wear white in a new way

White clothing is great for warm weather. Even better: angelic, white-lined eyes. Meredith Hayman, who’s dolled up Christie Brinkley, tells you how.

  • Apply NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in “Milk” ($4.50 at nordstrom.com) directly to the eye from lash to brow, and blend with finger to achieve a thin, even layer.
  • Use a cream eye-shadow brush to apply MAC Cream Colour Base in “Luna” ($20 at nordstrom.com) to lower lid from lash line to crease, blending toward hairline at the outer corner for a winged look.
  • Use Brow Gal Clear Brow Gel ($20 at thebrowgal.com) on top lashes and to keep brows groomed and in place.

Fight frizz

The No. 1 weapon? An in-salon keratin treatment, says curly-haired Cristina B., a stylist at Rita Hazan salon. “It’s one of the most popular services this time of year.” If you don’t want to shell out big bucks ($350 and up at Rita Hazan), there are over-the-counter cures.

  • Try a leave-in conditioner, such as Red-E-To Go Instant All-in- One Treatment ($9.99 at aonebeauty.com).
  • Make sure your hair is dry before you leave the house. “Wet hair in humidity only worsens the frizz,” says Cristina B.
  • Finish with a good gloss, like Rita Hazan’s Ultimate Shine Gloss ($26 at sephora.com), or an anti-humidity hairspray, like Oribe’s Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray ($39 at barneys.com).

Get fruity

If shocking hues aren’t your thing, keep calm and berry on. Miranda Kerr keeps it chill with soft pastel puckers, which Melanie Mills says are easy as 1-2-3.

  • Exfoliate by gently brushing your lips with a toothbrush.
  • Condition lips using Epicuren Anti- Aging Lip Balm SPF 15 ($10.75 at joybeauty.com), or you can use a tinted balm like Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in “Watermelon” ($4.99 at drugstore.com).
  • Finish with Gleam Lip Radiance in “Uncontrollable” ($24 at gleambymelaniemills.com).
