After months of rumors about the iPhone 6, this could be the biggest one yet: Apple may not release an iPhone 6 after all.
Before Apple fans go all Hamlet with a “to be or not to be” tragic soliloquy, perhaps they should recall the line from another Shakespeare play: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”
According to a report in Thailand’s Thai Rath newspaper, grumpy Apple executives had a meeting with Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission after it announced it had approved the sale of two unreleased iPhones with the model numbers A1524 and A1586, with the commission secretary Takorn Tantasith tweeting the news of the new models.
The famously secretive Cupertino-based tech company complained that the Thai authority had released too much information about Apple’s upcoming plans.
MacRumours reports a translation of the Thai newspaper report says Apple had “a chat” with Mr Takorn and clarified the two new phone models may not have the name iPhone 6.
It could be a sign that Apple is bringing its smartphones into line with the naming format of its tablets and MacBooks, with the expected 5.5-inch model to be called the iPhone Air and presumably the smaller 4.7-inch model called a variation of that.
Or it could just be Apple insists on playing it’s cards close to its chest.
If there is no iPhone 6, the clone sellers in certain dodgy technology shops in China are going to be very upset.
September is most likely when unveiling of the new iPhone will take place, with the device hitting the streets in mid-October.
