Travel & Leisure editor latest to join exodus from Time Inc.

Travel & Leisure Editor-in-Chief Nancy Novogrod is leaving after 21 years at the helm in the latest veteran editor departure from Time Inc.

“It’s been the job of my life,” said Novogrod.

Novogrod had succeeded Anna Wintour at House & Garden, but was tossed out of work after five years when S.I. Newhouse Jr. shut it down the first time.

She joined the American Express Publishing operation in the top spot at T&L and never left, eventually rising to editorial director of the AmEx titles before they were acquired last year by Time Inc.

Time Inc. Executive Vice President Evelyn Webster and Chief Content Officer Norm Pearlstine announced her departure with a memo to staffers on Thursday.

Novogrod said, “It was completely my decision.” She has not set a departure date, and said she will help in finding her successor. “I told them about six weeks ago that the time was right for me to go,” she said.

That said, she added, “I’m a hiker and an outdoors person. I love art. There a lot of things I hope to do.”

One of her first projects will be to write a book, and she has hired Amanda “Binky” Urban at ICM as her agent. “It will be about women and power, but it’s early stages yet.”
