Klecko hammers Jets’ Coples: ‘Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane’

Give Joe Klecko credit for another sack.

The Jets great took down a current Jet on the radio Friday. Klecko, appearing on WFAN, criticized outside linebacker Quinton Coples.

“A little bit of the time he looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane,” Klecko said.

The Jets drafted Coples in the first round of the 2012 draft. He had 4 ½ sacks last season. He started the season slowly after he broke his ankle in the preseason. Coples showed promise late in the year, registering 3 ½ sacks in the final month of the season.

“Sometimes [Coples] gets out there and does things that are unbelievable. Well, you need to go out there and stick your nose in there every time and make sure everybody knows you’re there. I think he has a lot to learn,” Klecko said.

Klecko, a member of the famed “Sack Exchange,” played defensive lineman for the Jets from 1977 to 1987. He was first-team All-Pro twice and had 24 career sacks.

“I don’t know him at all, but understanding attitude and body language, he sometimes comes out there I think and thinks, ‘Don’t you know who I am? I’m here.’ He has to start proving that he is something to be reckoned with,” Klecko said.

“You have to have defensive players on the team that do that kind of play — go for the jugular vein, all out, all the time. And then everyone starts to listen to you. If you have just a group of lukewarm guys, you’re going to have lukewarm players that will need to have to be picked up by their leaders.”
