Mets’ Wright: I’d recruit Tulowitzki, who’s ‘perfect’ for NY

MILWAUKEE — David Wright doesn’t know if the Mets can land Troy Tulowitzki or Carlos Gonzalez, but just the idea his team has interest in the Rockies sluggers means something to him.

The Post’s Joel Sherman reported Friday that Mets officials have let the Rockies know they want in on trade discussions if Tulowitzki or Gonzalez is ever made available.

Colorado management has shown no inclination at this point to trade either player, but the Mets are viewed within the industry as a good trade partner for the Rockies, who covet young pitching.

The Mets have highly regarded arms in Noah Syndergaard, Rafael Montero and Steven Matz, among others, within their minor league system.

“I do think in the very near future that we’re going to be to the point where we are a piece or two away,” Wright told The Post before the Mets faced the Brewers on Friday. “With that being said, [general manager] Sandy [Alderson], has got a tough job because, yeah, I’m sure we’re interested, but I’m sure there’s 29 other teams that are interested, also.”

“It’s going to be a tough call when we do get to the point, which I think is very soon, of what are you willing to give, because [the Rockies] are not going to be giving these guys away. What are you willing to give to obtain that? And that is kind of an open-ended question.”

Wright has gotten to know both sluggers from All-Star Games in recent years and said he would have no problem calling up Tulowitzki — who has a no-trade clause — to sell him on the Mets if discussions between the teams reach that point.

And there is no question in Wright’s mind the 30-year-old Tulowitzki could handle New York.

“He’s a competitor and he wants to win, and when you’re talking about a player of that caliber, I don’t think that type of guy gets nervous or intimidated by being on the big stage,” Wright said.

“So just from knowing him through the All-Star Game and playing against him for a few years now, it seems that if he does want to be moved, a place like New York would be perfect for him.”

Wright noted Gonzalez is a Gold Glove-caliber outfielder who hits for average and power.

How much would either player improve the Mets, as presently constructed?

“You’re talking about two of the better players in the game,” Wright said. “Ruben [Tejada] is starting to swing the bat better, so it’s no knock on any shortstop. It’s just that [Tulowitzki] hits like a corner infielder or corner outfielder and plays tremendous defense. The same with CarGo, he can play all three outfield positions and can hit like a corner outfielder, and that is why he’s so valuable.

“That is why they are getting paid so much money, because there’s not many people that can do what they do, so if you put either one of those guys in any lineup, it becomes a better lineup right away.”

But Wright, who is enduring a potential sixth straight losing season with the Mets, reiterated it doesn’t have to be necessarily Tulowitzki or Gonzalez the team pursues when the time is right.

“I’m excited to get to the point where you take a chance or make a trade or give up some of these prospects to get a piece or two where it kind of completes the puzzle,” Wright said. “And you take that next step to where you’re contending. That excites me.”
