Man accidentally runs over ex in DWI crash

A Long Island man was reported to be under psychiatric evaluation Sunday after he fatally struck his former girlfriend while allegedly driving drunk.

Lawrence Pagano, 23, was taken to Stony Brook Hospital after the tragic accident Saturday morning.

Krystal Berkowitz, 21, had jumped out of his car at around 4 a.m. on a road in Setauket because she feared he was too drunk to drive.

Soon afterward, Pagano attempted to pull over to talk to her, but accidentally ran into her.

Berkowitz suffered severe head trauma and Pagano made the call to 911 and tried to help responders save her life.

Suffolk County cops believe her death was an accident.

Pagano was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

His arraignment hearing was postponed Sunday after he was admitted to the hospital and placed under observation for 72 hours, Newsday said.

The two had remained friends after their breakup.
