Zuckerman lays off 17 at the Daily News

Daily News owner Mort Zuckerman wielded the ax again on Friday, laying off another 17 newsroom employees in a relentless drive to stem losses.

The seemingly indiscriminate cuts included a Pulitzer Prize winner, a published author, an award-winning business reporter and an expectant mother.

Heidi Evans, who had two stints at the paper totaling 20 years and shared in the paper’s last Pulitzer Prize in 2007, was among those let go.

Phyllis Furman, who had been lured to the paper from Crain’s New York Business in 1997, got a pink skip along with her business reporting colleague, Elizabeth Lazarowitz, who is on maternity leave.

Sheila McClear, who had written “The Last of the Live Nude Girls” when she was still a reporter at The Post before jumping to the Daily News, was also among those let go.

Michael Feeney, one of a handful of African-American reporters at the paper; Brooklyn borough reporter Natalie Musumeci; and police reporter Mark Morales were shown the door, as well.

The photo desk and copy desk were particularly hard hit, according to insiders.

Sources said the latest bloodletting on the editorial side followed a smaller number of cuts on the business side Thursday.

Speculation about the cuts has been building since last month, when the paper socked readers with a 66 percent price increase, from 75 cents to $1.25 in New York City.

Managing Editor Robert Moore was told to cut short his vacation and return to the office on Friday to hand out pink slips.

“I don’t comment on personnel matters,” Moore said.
