Amukamara’s big Super Bowl memory: Katy Perry

Prince Amukamara took to Reddit on Sunday afternoon to answer some fans’ questions, as bored athletes are wont to do, and he didn’t disappoint.

The Giants cornerback touched on all the essentials: the best quarterback he’s played against (Aaron Rodgers), his favorite breakfast his wife makes (biscuits and gravy, turkey sausage and scrambled eggs), and his favorite Super Bowl XLVI memory. Hoisting the Lombardi Trophy? Try again.

“Meeting Katy Perry at the end of the game on the field,” he wrote. Can’t blame him.

A fairly innocuous question to the fourth-year defensive back also shocked Redditors, when Amukamara was asked about his funniest teammates.

Charles James and Eli is definitely up there too,” Amukamara wrote. That’s Eli Manning he’s referring to. Really, we’re pretty sure that’s the Eli he’s talking about who’s such a comic in the locker room.

He also provided Giants fans with some PR-friendly fodder of what to look forward to this season.

“I’m excited to play with them,” the 25-year-old wrote about Big Blue newcomers Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Walter Thurmond, who’ll join him in the defensive backfield. “They bring a different culture to our team and a different style of play. I’m learning a lot from them.”

As fun as the chat was, Amukamara shed a little bit of light on how harsh the life of an NFL player can be, given the inherent short shelf life of players so dependent on athleticism. If he could switch places with commissioner Roger Goodell for a day, Amukamara’s first step would be to “Pay the retired players more.”

The biggest drawback to playing in the NFL? “Security,” he wrote. “Not knowing when it is going to be your last play, or your last day on the team.”

And when asked how he keeps himself motivated, the corner replied, “Knowing every year that the Giants are looking for someone younger and cheaper, also when you’re not in good shape you’re more prone to injuries.”
