‘Sherlock’ returning for Season 4 in 2015

“Sherlock” is coming back — but fans will have to wait a while before their favorite detective returns to the small screen.

The drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, respectively, will return for a fourth season in 2015, the BBC confirmed Wednesday.

“Sherlock” will begin filming a special in January and three new episodes will go into production later in the year.

“A special, plus a new series of three episodes — it’s a record-breaking run!,” said co-creator Steven Moffat in a statement. “Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you’d expect…”

PBS has aired “Sherlock” in the US since its premiere in 2010. Season Three — which debuted last January — saw Sherlock return from the dead, John wed Mary (Amanda Abbington) and the two face off against arch-rival Moriarty (Andrew Scott).
