Trustees tap legendary coach Hurley as high school’s president

Bob Hurley Sr. has made it his mission to keep Jersey City Catholic school St. Anthony open.

Now the Hall of Fame high school basketball coach is being rewarded for his success in that endeavor. The school’s board of trustees recently appointed him as its new president, it announced.

A retired corrections officer and lifelong Jersey City resident, the legendary coach will be responsible for making personnel decisions, hiring faculty, running developmental programs and continuing his role in fundraising.

“At this time we needed someone who has a history with the school and an appreciation of its various constituents. We concluded that Bob fit the bill,” St. Anthony chairman Tony Marano told the Jersey Journal.

The subject of a book and a documentary, Hurley has been involved with fundraising for the school for about 20 years, which has included running the Hurley Golf Tournament.

“I believe we can continue to make improvements that will help bring the school and its students to their full potential,” he said.

The father of two college basketball head coach — Bobby at Buffalo and Danny at Rhode Island — Hurley has led the Friars to 25 state titles and over 1,100 wins. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
