I have been underemployed since May 2007. How does a senior-level accountant find a full-time job when he’s only found contract work for seven years? I have been on interviews for permanent positions but I get the feeling managers shy away from hiring me because I’ve only been working temp jobs. Should I change my field?
First, I’d look on the bright side — at least you’ve been able to stay employed and keep your skills sharp in your area of expertise. Many people experiencing “underemployment” have had to switch fields entirely and earn significantly less money.
It is possible your temp work is affecting your job search for a full-time position — but you’ve been getting interviews. That means the length of your temp work isn’t preventing prospective employers from considering you initially. It might have more to do with how you are performing on those interviews. If you come across as negative, that could be the real reason you aren’t getting hired. Turn the temp experience into a positive. Talk about how the different companies and cultures you’ve worked for demonstrate your broad experience and ability to walk into any environment and adapt quickly.
Finally, don’t forget to let every temp employer know you are looking for a full-time position — many hire temp-to-perm. Good luck.
