NYPD commish defends subway dancers, says they deserve space

Those guys that do flips and cartwheels on the subways, while riders dodge kicks to their faces, should be allowed to perform underground, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said Friday.

“There is an opportunity in certain locations in the system where those individuals can perform and not be a risk to themselves, or to the public on moving cars,” Bratton said. “On a subway car that sways, jilts, stops, it’s too great to ignore and we will not ignore it.”

The top cop said he would talk to the MTA about the idea, as well as permits being issued to entertain in appropriate places.

Cops have arrested and charged 46 dancers and acrobats this year with reckless endangerment, as part of a new system where the MTA shares riders’ electronic complaint underground with the NYPD to tackle quality of life issues.

Transit cops have also put the heat on panhandlers, churros sellers, and other peddlers in the subway.
