Discovering Mexico’s St. Regis Punta Mita resort

What: If there were awards given for best ocean sunset view, this resort — hugging Mexico’s dramatic, craggy Pacific coastline — would be a sure winner. As it stands, the 120-room property has racked up an impressive list of accolades, including TripAdvisor’s #1 Hotel in Mexico for 2014. As for activities, it’s an embarrassment of riches: two Jack Nicklaus golf courses, a Remède Spa, three pools, tennis courts, a children’s club, a private yacht and much more — making it an ideal (if pricey) family-friendly vacation destination.

Why: Whether you’re cavorting in the warm waters of the Bahia de Banderas (and maybe catching sight of a whale and her calf) or hitting the links at the one-of-a-kind oceanside courses (including a par-3 on a natural island) or just lazing under a cabana on the white-sand beach (with food and bev service), everything you need is right on site.

Working well: Live sea creature demonstrations, sandcastle building, bean bag tossing, beginning Spanish lessons, two big pools — we didn’t witness one tantrum all weekend long because kids literally have no time to be bored here. But if you want a more couple-y experience, not to worry: There’s a third, adults-only pool area, and we didn’t spot any ankle-biters at the fine-dining Carolina restaurant or the swanky Remède Spa.

Needs work: St. Regis’ heralded butler service was a bit spotty: One morning our coffee arrived 20 minutes late, the second morning our order was forgotten and finally came just as we were checking out.

Must try: If you arrive on a Friday, reserve a spot at the Beach BBQ for a kick-off-your-shoes mingle with fellow vacationers. The family-style meal, served on a long communal table set up on the sand, is tasty and filling (lots of grilled chicken, sausage and beef; drinks included) and the atmosphere is relaxed and fun — no matter your age.

Don’t miss: Taking an outdoor shower — all the 89 rooms and 31 suites have a private one.

Details: Garden-view rooms from $460, dropping to $399 July 1.
