Please stop asking Tom Coughlin about his ailing No. 1 pick

Tom Coughlin is tired of having to answer questions about his first-round pick not practicing. Whether he’s vexed by rookie Odell Beckham Jr.’s nagging injury or the constant questions that follow is hard to say: Perhaps a bit of both.

“I would like the next time someone asks me that to have him out here practicing, so I don’t have to answer it,’’ an irritated Coughlin said Sunday. “You know as much as I do. You’re out here watching him every day, too. That’s all I can tell you. I would like to see the young man practice before he got into the regular season. That would certainly be a good thing.’’

The wideout from LSU spent practice jogging at a leisurely pace, running routs at half-speed off to the side and working with trainers.

Jon Beason’s rehab appears to be going well, with the veteran middle linebacker running at full speed and making over-the-shoulder grabs in simulated pass coverage.

Coughlin said Beason is making progress, but he doesn’t have any hard time line or recent updates from the trainers.

“I don’t ask every day. They don’t tell me every day,’’ Coughlin said. “He works on the side, and occasionally I’ll be close enough to ask him how he’s doing, or in a meeting I’ll say something to him. But his responses are all positive: ‘I feel good, I’m going to do this and this today.’ Only one time did he say he was a little sore. Everything else has been stuff you’d find encouraging.’’

Peyton Hillis (ankle) and Trindon Holliday (hamstring) returned to practice. Coughlin said the Hillis looked rusty, while adding of Holliday, “He tried to do some running and he did an individual [drill]. That is probably the extent of it. I’m not even going to speculate [if he’ll play this week]. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.’’

After catching TDs in all four preseason games, WR Corey Washington has gotten so popular he’s had to change his phone number. But he still has an edge about him after being cut by Arizona on May 28 after just over two weeks with the Cardinals.

“That put a chip on my shoulder. I don’t think I was there for at least three weeks and they cut me,” said Washington, who’s looking forward to facing the Cardinals in Week 2. “I wasn’t doing badly at rookie mini-camp over there in Arizona. I have a big chip on my shoulder coming over here, showing the guys what I can do.

“I’m ready for that game. There’s a big chip on my shoulder, I’m ready for that game. I’ve got that game on the calendar, cell phone, iPad, everything.”
