Andre Johnson ready to move on from Texans

Andre Johnson could be ready to leave the only team he’s ever known.

The All-Pro wide receiver, who has been with the Houston Texans since being drafted third overall in 2003, spoke to reporters Tuesday about his frustration with the team that went 2-14 last season. Johnson has already gone through one rebuilding process with the franchise and doesn’t plan on being part of another.

“Nobody’s been here as long as I have. You just kind of look at things,” Johnson said. “I’ve been thinking about things this offseason, I just kind of wonder sometimes, is this is still the place for me?”

Though the Texans landed defensive end Jadeveon Clowney with the first pick in last week’s draft, the offensive direction is in question after the departure of quarterback Matt Schaub to the Raiders. The Texans’ quarterback depth chart is topped by Ryan Fitzpatrick and fourth-round pick Tom Savage out of Pittsburgh.

The franchise’s all-time leading receiver said he has not asked for a trade, but that he is not planning on participating in organized team activities or the team’s mandatory minicamp in June. Johnson did not attend last week’s voluntary workout with new coach Bill O’Brien.

The 32-year-old has three years remaining on his contract.

“Now I’m on my third head coach, that’s something I give thought to,” Johnson said. “I just look over my career, is it a place? I’ve only been to the playoffs twice. I think we’ve only had three winning seasons, two 8-8 seasons. I don’t think any player wants to experience that.

“You go through a rebuilding process, some people say it’s not rebuilding, some people say it’s a quick fix. Everybody has their own opinion. But I’ve been through this more than once. When I make my decision, I’ll make my decision.”
