Meteor lights up the sky in western NY, Canada

A fireball lit up the daytime skies of western New York state and Canada on Sunday as a meteor burned up in the atmosphere above.

Dashcams across the area, including one in Toronto, happened to catch the object as it fell from the heavens, burning out across the bright blue sky, according to Space.com. The object appears in the video above at roughly 0:20 before flashing out of existence at 0:25.

While the short-lived lightshow surprised the motorist in the video, the meteor appeared to have caused no damage in North America.

Last year, a huge meteor lit up the skies of Russia on Feb. 15 and exploded in the atmosphere. The explosion caused injuries as windows shattered across the Chelyabinsk region.

The recent fireball could be connected to the Eta Aquarid meteor shower, which peaked on the night of May 5. The shower occurs annually when the planet crosses the path of debris left behind by Halley’s Comet.
