De Blasio ‘troubled’ by NYPD cop held in India

Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Friday he is “troubled” by the NYPD cop who is being held in India by local authorities — and facing up to seven years in prison there.

“Obviously we want to know a lot more about what’s going on,” de Blasio said at a Ford Foundation law enforcement event in Midtown when asked about Harlem Police Officer Manny Encarnacion’s saga.

“But so far, from what I’m hearing, I’m troubled by it and I want to make sure we’re providing support to him and make sure he’s not being treated unfairly.”

Sources have told The Post that a New Delhi airport officer made it clear to Encarnacion, 49, that the country is still bitter over the arrest last year of an Indian deputy consul in New York.

“You guys like to strip-search our diplomats,” the officer told Encarnacion during his March 10 bust at Indira Gandhi International Airport for accidentally bringing three bullets in his checked luggage.

It was a clear reference to the arrest and strip search of Devyani Khobragade over visa fraud related to her nanny.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said Friday the department is “staying very engaged with that issue in India … We are certainly concerned for that officer and for his wife who’s there with him in India at this time.

“But that’s a process that’s moving slowly in the India justice system — but we’re staying informed.”

Encarnacion was charged with violating the country’s Arms Act of 1959 — and is facing up to seven years in an Indian prison. He is forbidden from leaving the country until his case plays out in court.

His next appearance in April 17.

Sources have said the bullets were in a jacket pocket because he had been to the NYPD firing range that week for recertification and forgot about the extra ammo.

Encarnacion was in India to visit his newlywed wife, Vida, an Iranian student.
