Strong quake hits Japan, triggering tsunami warning

A strong earthquake rocked northern Japan early Saturday, causing a small tsunami near the nuclear power plant devastated in 2011 by a massive tidal wave.

The 6.8-magnitude quake struck 6 miles below the sea surface off the coast of Fukushima at about 4:30 a.m. Japan time and shook buildings as far away as Tokyo, 120 miles southwest of the epicenter.

The small tsunami left one person injured in Fukushima, local police said. No major damage was reported.

Several towns devastated by the tsunami three years ago, which killed 19,000 people, issued evacuation orders, and officials at the Dai-ichi nuclear power plant found no abnormalities or damage at the facility.
