More hotels going up in Queens

Tourists aren’t just going to Queens for the airports anymore — the borough has become a hotel hot spot, according to a report.

Queens has 10,489 hotel rooms compared with Brooklyn’s 3,986. Manhattan leads with 86,044 rooms, but hotel development in Queens has steadily gained steam.

Queens added 500 new hotel rooms from Jan. 1 through mid-April, according to STR, a research firm that tracks hotel data. In that same period, Brooklyn didn’t add any new hotel rooms.

Queens hotel growth used to be concentrated around La Guardia and JFK airports, but development has moved to neighborhoods closer to Manhattan. There are eight hotels currently under construction in Long Island City alone.

And Queens hotels are more affordable than those in other boroughs. Rooms there average around $128 a night, compared with $153 in Brooklyn, STR found.

“Instead of paying an arm and a leg in Manhattan, you can [room] in Queens and still get the full experience of staying in New York City,” said Danielle Strickland, who works at Wyndham Garden hotel.
